The Glenshire subdivision, located at West Bellfort and Beltway 8 South, has a swim club that has been part of the community for more than 30 years. A non-profit organization dedicated to strengthening swimming skills, team spirit, and to building a swimming tradition, the Gators invite residents and non-residents ages 4-18 of age (such age being determined by May 31st of current year) to join in the 2008 season. The Gators are run by adult volunteers with an elected Board of Directors, affiliated with the Southwest Houston Recreational Swim League, and funded through registration fees, donations, and fund raising activities. Practice and/or meets run from May through mid-July of each year. A strong emphasis is placed on sportsmanship, safety, and promoting fun through a competitive summer swimming program.
Our History:
The Glenshire Gators Swim Team came into existence more than 30 years ago as part of the Glenshire Athletic Association, which was a neighborhood organization, dedicated to youth sports. The first organized swim team in 1975 was named the Glenshire Gladiators and had approximately 25-30 swimmers. Sue McNutt coached the team. To qualify, the swimmers had to demonstrate that they could swim across the deep end of the West pool. The Gladiators had bicentennial swim suits, red with white stars. All the swimmers had tanned star shapes on their bodies that year. The first swim meet, against Sharpstown, who had a full team, was an all day affair while the Gladiators watched the Sharpstown team put lots of heats into the water for each event. ‘By 1976, it was decided that the Gladiators did not sound like a swim team and the team was renamed the Glenshire Gators, with the colors of green and white. The Glenshire Athletic Association no longer exists, but the Gators have survived and are thriving. We even have parents who were once members of the Gators. The swim team is a healthy, fun and rewarding summer activity for the children of our neighborhood and we are grateful and proud to have it. The 2007 Gators extend a heartfelt “Thank you” to all who have volunteered during the last 30 years!
We are a part of South Houston Recreational Swim League.
